Sony has unveiled a new 27-inch 4K 3D display that does not require glasses for viewing.

The new screen is part of Sony’s Spatial Reality Display line, which the company first showcased in 2020.

Sony says its ELF-SR2 Spatial Reality Display has upgraded vision sensors, high-speed hardware processing, and image enhancement capabilities.

The company says the ELF-SR2’s features help to simplify VR and AR digital content creation.

The ELF-SR2 can reproduce colors accurately, upscale from 2K to 4K, and display fine details better through color moiré correction.

The display also features facial tracking and a wide viewing angle for a natural and comfortable experience.

According to Sony, the wide viewing angle provides consistent and accurate views from different vantage points.

Sony says the display’s features enable it to accommodate a broader PC range and support varying uses and needs.

Development-Ready

The possibilities for a 3D display are limitless.

With efficient and streamlined support for SDKs like Unreal Engine and Unity, the ELF-SR2 allows for development with OpenGL, DirectX, and OpenXR.

Sony says support for the ELF-SR2’s OpenXR capabilities will come later in 2023.

Sony also will provide a database of display-compatible applications at a new Spatial Reality Display App Select website.

Users will have access to case studies, compatible apps, and other information on the site.

Sony will offer the intuitive Spatial Reality Display Player with the display, featuring support for different 3D file formats.

VP of Professional Display Solutions Rich Ventura says the new display brings 3D content to life with astonishing authenticity and sophistication.

According to Ventura, it’s a hands-on experience.

“While our users love the technology, we keep hearing the same question from professionals; ‘does this display come in a larger size?’” says Ventura. “As we expand into more B2B verticals and environments, I’m happy to say that in addition to a bigger screen, we’ve added some powerful and commonly requested features to enhance content production.”

Ventura says added features include a wider color gamut, a new engine, advanced high-speed sensors, and rich application & development support.

Ventura notes that the price is also extremely competitive.

Industry Compatibility

Sony says its new display can utilize industry-specific applications through the company’s partnerships with industry entities.

Partnerships include Digital Nation Entertainment, Arcturus, KiksAR, Magnopus, Pixomondo, ShoP Architects, Sketchfab, and WhiteMoon Dreams.

Sony plans to release the ELF-SR2 in May with an MSRP of $5,000 and a 3-year limited warranty.

If you want to view the ELF-SR2 early, the company will demo it at the Vegas NAB Show April 16-19.

Sony will also showcase the ELF-SR2 at AWE (Santa Clara, CA) May 31-June 2, and InfoComm (Orlando, FL) June 14-16.
